The Overworld is a manuscript by Lisa Eckstein. The novel is complete, thoroughly edited, and ready for consideration by agents and editors.
The story is a psychological drama narrated by the protagonist. Robin is falling in love, but she faces dangerous opposition from the inhabitants of a world that exists only in her mind.
Robin has worked hard to lead an independent adult life, and she wishes her anxious older sister would stop treating her like a child. She attends her therapy sessions, avoids scary situations, and visits the Overworld only as part of her nightly routine, so there's no reason for Tess to worry. In the Overworld, Robin shares her troubles with the bird-women, who advise her on problems she encounters in the normal world.
When Robin meets Farley at the library, she's excited by the possibilities, but Tess doesn't think she's ready for a romantic relationship. Robin insists she can handle it and gains support from her psychiatrist and eventually from Tess. To Robin's surprise, the bird-women object with increasing vehemence.
As the relationship between Robin and Farley grows more serious, the threats from the Overworld turn violent. Robin fears the bird-women will harm her and the people she cares about. Rather than tell anyone what's happening, she makes plans in secret. Paranoia and panic destroy her fragile mental balance. Robin must restore the boundary between delusion and reality in order to save both her independence and the love she's found with Farley.
