I think the sarcasm is what saves it from just being a soppy, insipid, run of the mill romantic comedy. It's also a very well-crafted novel, and I think that Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most charming protagonists out there.

Interestingly, though, my mom seems to be engaging more with Jane Eyre than she did with P&P. Granted, this may be due to external circumstances/timing, and may also have to do with having it read to her instead of reading it herself. Jane Eyre is so much more intense that it might be easier to follow--plus there are fewer characters to keep track of. But she did enjoy P&P, especially once we got about halfway through it. And we're not done yet with Jane Eyre, so her preferences may shift!Sallynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6010942979784569627.post-47079549004042925342012-04-04T13:22:55.347-07:002012-04-04T13:22:55.347-07:00laurenhat: If you read the first 30 or so pages of...laurenhat: If you read the first 30 or so pages of FLAME ALPHABET (not sure how long the Kindle sample is, you can also look at my copy), you'll have a pretty good idea of whether you want to read the rest. I do recommend HALF LIFE to you in particular if you're interested, and you're welcome to borrow it.

mamagotcha: I look forward to hearing your thoughts!Lisa Ecksteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11469107523441985396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6010942979784569627.post-40742322352378680672012-04-04T07:13:48.579-07:002012-04-04T07:13:48.579-07:00Ooh, thanks! Very helpful in thinking about how to revise in a not-too-daunting fashion.laurenhathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04109325640858487775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6010942979784569627.post-49724304530569674712012-04-04T01:31:48.431-07:002012-04-04T01:31:48.431-07:00"Along the way, the story features dollhouses..."Along the way, the story features dollhouses and nuclear testing, both subjects I find fascinating" -- this juxtaposition made me laugh. :)

I'm still intrigued but really unsure if I would enjoy THE FLAME ALPHABET. A bonus of the new Kindle I just bought -- I can get a sample of that book, as well as all of these books that you've recommended here (and which I haven't already read) and try them out! Yay. (I guess I could do that before on my computer/phone, but I somehow never thought of it before.)laurenhathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04109325640858487775noreply@blogger.com
